Introduction to photography

UNDERSTANDING Key words: mise-en-scene, setting, costume, expression, lighting, props

TASKS 1. Analyse 3 teenage rooms by Salinger – Use mise-en scene. Describe the works

2. Take own photographs = 3 people in 3 settings

3. Analyse own photographs – use mise-en scene

4. The props tell a story: annotate each image. Salinger’s and own…what is the narrative? What can we read?

5. Using GIMP. Crop images. Exhibit on Powerpoint and make notes (better? More meaning?)

6. Using GIMP. Enhance ‘Color’/play with hue/saturate/B+W etc. Each change should be saved and exhibited on Powerpoint.

And SEE SMHW for extensions

Extension: PP screen about the ‘Rule of Thirds’ and reflect on own work

TASK: Create a powerpoint. Find two 'teenager' photographs by Adrienne Salinger.
Paste them and comment using mise-en scene.

HOMEWORK CHALLENGE: People and places
Find your own teenagers (Yourself + two others) and take photographs in their rooms - surrounded by their favourite objects
and/or a person in a trade, or family member doing their most important tasks
(3 people altogether = thirty photographs!)
